Equipment Requirements

Applying Perma-Zyme requires motor graders, water trucks, a padfoot compactor, a smooth wheel compactor, and sometimes a reclaimer. Here are the machines we recommend and substitutions customers can make.

Motor Graders

Motor-Grader-1

We recommend using two Cat 140 motor graders or equivalent with 12-foot blades and ripping attachments that have the capability to go at least six inches deep. (Two motor graders speed up the job; however, if you only have one motor grader, it will still do the trick.)

If a motor grader isn't available, use a tractor with tiller and grader attachments.

Water Trucks

Water-Truck-1

For most Perma-Zyme projects, we recommend two 3,000-gallon water trucks or larger. While Perma-Zyme is non-toxic and non-hazardous, the water trucks should be for non-potable water.

If a water truck isn't available, use a water buffalo, feed truck, or sprayer. Be sure to thoroughly rinse this equipment before and after using Perma-Zyme.

Padfoot Compactor (Sheepsfoot Compactor)

Padfoot-Compactor

We highly recommend using a padfoot compactor because it allows for aggressive compaction, resulting in a stronger finished surface after the application process. The padfoot compactor should have vibratory functionality; however, the machine size depends on preference and
local availability.

If a padfoot compactor isn't available, use the wheelpacking method. (See our articles on UNPAVED ROAD & PAD CONSTRUCTION or PAVED ROAD CONSTRUCTION, depending on the appropriate type of project.)

Smooth Wheel Compactor (Smooth Drum Compactor)

Smooth-Wheel-Compactor

A smooth wheel compactor with vibratory functionality is necessary for all Perma-Zyme applications. The vibratory functionality is vital, as it will help compact the soil properly.

There is no good substitute for a smooth wheel compactor.

Optional Equipment: Reclaimer

Reclaimer

A reclaimer, also known as a pulverizer or soil stabilizer, is not necessary for all projects, but it is necessary for certain projects such as full-depth reclamations. The reclaimer will pulverize existing asphalt and/or soil and add water at the same time. For questions about using Perma-Zyme with a reclaimer, contact your sales representative.
